The felling of olive trees owned by palestinians in the West Bank

More than a thousand olive trees were cut down in the West Bank the last month, near jewish settlements. Israel defense minister orders, not an investigation, but the establishment of a panel to investigate...
Israel knows, or pretended to know what was happening in Irak before the Irak war, knows, or at least pretend to know what is happening in Lebanon, Syria and in Iran but it does not know who is cutting palestinian's olive trees, specially when these trees are located near the jewish settlements and it needs a panel to investigate...

Jumblatt contradicted by an Al-Qaida statement

Half an hour after Jumblatt declared to the AFP that the syrian regime is behind the Katioucha fire that hit Israel from south Lebanon and which was followed by an israeli bombardment on palestinian camp Naamé, south of Beyrouth, a lebanese branch to Al-Qaida group in Irak proclaimed responsibility for the firing.
Jumblatt is becoming really silly, still accusing Syria of every bit of unrest in Lebanon, even though the syrian army left Lebanon months ago and Syria is under international pressure and on the defensive. However, what is going on in Lebanon makes me think that after the syrian army and intelligence apparatus left Lebanon, the country became like Irak, a theatre to every militant and intelligence group who have political and military interests in the region. Jumblatt's attitude is irresponsible if not comical. Either he has a quasi-obsessive fixation on Syria or he is deliberatrely playing in the hands of a specific foreign country, enemy to Syria and who has interest in keeping the pressure on the syrian regime. At this point, Syria has at least four declared ennemies in the region: Jordan and Saudi Arabia because of their crusades against arab non sunnis regimes, the united states and Israel.

''Senior UN official has said Iraq's parliamentary elections were credible and the results should stand, angering Sunni Arabs who have taken to the streets demanding a new vote.
The UN endorsement, which came on Wednesday after opposition groups demanded international intervention, was likely to deflate their calls for the elections to be cancelled.''

Sharon to be operated

From Le Monde: Sharon is to have a light intracardiac procedure to treat a cardiac lesion provoked by the blood clot that rushed him into hospital a week ago and impaired transiently his speech. Likud leaders are casting doubt on the ability of Sharon to fill the position of prime minister for the next five years if Kadima, his new party, is to win the elections scheduled this winter.
From Haaretz: ''The physicians also said they had discovered a congenital defect in Sharon's heart, which apparently led to the stroke. In the next few weeks, Sharon will undergo cardiac catheterization to seal the "hole" in his heart, and minimize the danger of having another stroke.'' His personal physician also confirmed that: ''Sharon had gout. Gout, which is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the joints that can cause great pain and inflammation, is sometimes caused by the high consumption of foods such as red meat (the meat of the flesh of palestinians*), wine and cream. Sharon has been taking daily medication for gout for the past 20 years that prevents the joint pain.''

Property in Israel: A master plan built on the law of the jungle principle !

''There's a system for turning Palestinian property into Israel's state land.'' writes Akiva Eldar

The torture files: Can carefully chosing his words help hiding the facts ?

Listening to US officials answering media reports about torture and extraordinary renditions needs a kind of a special analysis program to understand what they are finally saying and what is the message. Also, one of their techniques is systematically contradicting each other so that may be if a word or a sentence of a particular official are or become compromising and poisoning for the Bush administration, one can find their antidote already in other simultaneous declarations given by another official.
However this time, both a compromising declaration and its antidote are to benefit the desperate fight of the syrian-born canadian Maher Arar against the US administration use of torture and extraordinary renditions.

Bil'in, the symbol of the peaceful struggle of palestinians against the Israeli apartheid wall

Christianity and ancient myths

''The babe born of a virgin, in a stable, heralded by an angelic host, visited by Magi (Persian Zoroastrian astrologers) following a star, targeted for death by an evil king. None of this would have struck the average Roman as entirely original, but the vague familiarity of the stories may have lent them credibility. It appears that the Christian movement, highly diverse in the first few centuries, was able to incorporate narratives and practices from other traditions into itself that gave it a comparative advantage by the early fourth century. In 313 Emperor Constantine legalized and patronized the faith. Soon thereafter an already formidable empire-wide administrative apparatus merged with state power, and heresies and paganisms were outlawed and largely suppressed. But Christianity continued to incorporate new influences such as the above-mentioned Christmas practices. Few Christians (or others) nowadays know of Mithras, but today much of the world unwittingly celebrates his birth.''

Sharon's next move toward peace: isolate the new PA after isolating Arafat

After isolating Arafat, Israel is now putting direct and indirect pressure (through Europe and the US) on the Palestinian authority and the next elections: 1) claiming that it will prevent the 200000 palestinian voters living in the occupied east Jerusalem from voting if Hamas is an eligible official party in the elections, 2) cutting european and US aid if Hamas is an official party eligible in the elections. The results of these pressures are likely to reinforce Hamas... which entitle Israel now to predict the collapse of Abbas and to claim that "At this point, Mahmoud Abbas is so weak in relation to Hamas that he is unable to implement the smallest decision."
And you call this strategy a strategy for peace ? In fact Sharon's strategy for peace is taking unilateral decisions weakening the PA and refusing to engage in talks with the palestinians and you call this man a man of peace ? There will be no peace in this because this is a strategy for fueling anger among the palestinians and pushing peace away. Sharon's strategy is 'fuite en avant' ...to delay indefinitely the peace process and to put it in 'formaldehyde' according to his former foreign minister speaking to Haaretz...

Israel 'eases restrictions' in Bethlehem

''Yet Israel's massive West Bank barrier cast a shadow on the celebrations. The structure, which snakes along the boundary with the West Bank, has divided Bethlehem and prevented tourists from walking into town on the biblical-era road likely used by Jesus and Mary.
Shops, restaurants and businesses that once thrived remained shuttered, split off from the rest of the town by the 25-foot concrete wall, which Israel built to prevent suicide bombers from reaching its cities.
Ogden and the group of Presbyterians he traveled with made sure to visit the area of the barrier to see what they had read about in the newspapers, and were shocked by what they found.
``We were interested in seeing ... how the conflict is being played out in the place of Christ's birth,'' Ogden said. ``I don't think anything can quite prepare you for something like that.''

22.12.05

How can Israel maintain its status as the only 'democracy' in the middle east ?

By preventing other arab countries and specially palestinians from accessing true democracy, through different means: maintaining a military approach of might and superpower to neighboring countries, threatening and intimidating them, processes by which economic and social development are hindered (Syria for example has to maintain an army because of the hostile neighbourhood of israel and the Golan occupation), encouraging, along with the US, sectarian and religious regimes, and recently, hindering the voting process by interfering in the coming palestinian elections.

In the sixties, two of the arab countries who share borders with Israel had secular regimes (Syria and Irak); Israel signed peace deals only with the others, a monarchy and a military regime (Jordan and Egypte). Now, after they lit the sectarian tensions in Irak and threw the country into a civil war, they are refusing to open peace talks with Syria and putting pressure on the international community to isolate the syrian regime, paving the way for ethnic and religious tensions in the whole area.
Israelis can brag about being the only 'democracy' in the middle east, however, they are an ethnic and apartheid state, an occupation and colonial force, not different from any military, dictatorial, ugly and unjust regime surviving only by force, impeding development and progress in neighbouring countries and opressing its own non-jewish arab population !
Please, don't tell me this is a democracy !

Divided they stand !

Where are Irak's WMDs ?

In Syria, transfered before the war, maintain israeli intelligence who tipped the americans about Irak's WMDs despite the fact that Bush spoke recently about the failing of the intelligence on Irak . But Israelis still maintain their intelligence was true and are saying that Bush is making an error on top of the first error: 'we are sorry, the intelligence was false'.
It looks to me that, at best, this is an excuse to not taking responsibility for faulty intelligence from the Israeli part and, at worse, this is a disguise to manipulations of intelligence by Israel and another incitment to war in the middle east.

The EU has joined the US in its interference in palestinian elections

''Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, has said tens of millions of dollars of aid to the Palestinian Authority could be halted if the Islamist group wins elections next month and fails to renounce violence.''

In the meantime, Sharon, the butcher of Beyrouth, can exert any violence it pleases him against palestinians without anybody voicing a concern ! Double standards are being used by official organizations and governments against the weak and the poor and one don't have to wonder why there are so many palestinians ready to commit themselves to suicide bombing.

The decision of the US and now the EU to stop aid if Hamas wins the palestinian elections is a stupid decision because it is reinforcing Hamas's standing among palestinians and shutting down moderate voices.
Otherwise how can you react to such an intimidating attitude ?

The three most senior judges wanted all evidence, where there was even a risk of torture, to be excluded. The other four were less sweeping. They ruled that where there was a probability of torture, evidence would be excluded, but where it was only a possibility, the evidence should be admissible in the interests of national security. ''

The only real measure to counter climate change: wait for Bush to go

Simon Retallack, a senior research fellow on climate change policy at the Institute for Public Policy Research, Britain’s largest thinktank, thinks that trying to engage the US in the negotiations on climate change is actually doing more harm than anything else to these negotiations. The reason is that the US is spreading false rumors, manipulating and arm twisting some countries to stall the negotiations. His advice is: wait for Bush to go and try to build momentum in the US for mandatory cuts on gaz emissions.
''A few countries are getting most of the blame for this state of affairs. At the top of the list of course is the US, with rumours flying that Bush officials are using hard-ball tactics, from arm-twisting to irresistible persuasion, to get other countries to do their dirty work for them in obstructing progress. There have been stories of a US meeting with Brazilian officials to get them on board which was so top secret that US Congressional delegates were told to keep out. There are also suspicions that the US is spreading false rumours that the EU wants developing countries to take on emission-reductions targets, which could drive them into the hands of the US and away from the EU on important issues.
But the finger of criticism is also being pointed at Canada and the EU, and within it particularly the UK, as current EU chair, and Italy, which has a mind of its own on climate change. They stand accused of a fundamental error in strategy: focussing their efforts on engaging the US when the Bush administration clearly is not only uninterested but is taking a wrecking ball to the whole process. Watering down any agreement to appease the US in these circumstances would hardly seem to be a productive approach
.''

Why Haaretz is interested in the recent french riots ?

After giving an interview to Haaretz in which he describes the french rioters as ungrateful, a menace to the republic, an ethnic bunch black-black-beur, Finkielkraut gave fade apologies to Le Monde who reported his interview to Haaretz, just enough to prevent some anti-racist associations from taking legal actions against him. However what strikes me, despite the recent revival of his views by Nicolas Sarkozy, is the continuing interest Haaretz, a journal of the israeli left, is having for Finkielkraut's declarations and, beyond, for the french riots. Right at the beginning of the riots, Haaretz spoke of an Intifada. Despite the many differences, and the possible amalgam one might be tempted to make by drawing a common denominator based on religion and ethnicity, what the intifada and the frech riots have in common is a state of an imposed social and economic apartheid on young people in a police controlled society where race and skin colour, as well as religion, can be a reason for arbitrary arrests and detentions.

The new US campaign to respread democracy in venezuela

Venezuela is a problem for the US. It is a democracy with a popular president that the US wants to unseat. This way the US hopes they can convince everybody that venezuela has no true democracy and that it needs a US intervention to restore democracy.

Extraordinary rendition and international law

A group from the three UK parliamentarian parties (Labor, Conservatives and Lib Democrats) investigates the use of UK airports and military bases by the CIA during illegal expeditions or 'extraordinary renditions' transfering 'terror suspects' abducted from their own countries and their homes to secret jails abroad where they can be tortured and kept from having legal counsel and advice, outside US jurisdiction.
''The all-party parliamentary group on extraordinary rendition, with representatives from the three main parties, was formed after the Guardian reported in September that aircraft operated by the CIA had flown in and out of civilian airports and RAF bases in the UK at least 210 times since September 11 2001.
Last night the Foreign Office said: "We have no evidence to corroborate media allegations about use of UK territory in rendition operations."
A report for the group by New York University's school of law's centre for human rights and global justice, concluded: "A state which aids or assists another state in the commission of an internationally wrongful act by the latter is internationally responsible for doing so."
The authors believe the government could face legal sanctions because of the UK's support. "Accomplice liability has been recognised in international criminal law since at least the Nuremberg trials," they said.

''Rice is expected to make a public statement today stressing that the US does not violate allies' sovereignty or break international law. She will also remind people their governments are co-operating in a fight against militants who have bombed commuters in London and Madrid. She will drive home her message in private meetings with officials in Germany and at the EU headquarters in Brussels. ''
But conservative and Lib Dem MPs from the UK say that Rice 'does not seem to realise that for a large section of Washington and European opinion, the Bush administration is in a shrinking minority of people that has not grasped that lowering our standards [on human rights] makes us less, not more, secure'.
