"President Peres, you are older than me and your voice is very loud. The reason for you raising your voice is the psychology of guilt … I know very well how you hit and killed children on the beaches."
Erdogan's outburst was his most high-profile in a series of outspoken attacks on Israel's Gaza operations. He had previously called the offensive – in which around 1,300 Palestinians died – a "crime against humanity" and demanded Israel's expulsion from the UN.

Movie Comment: The Reader
Just to break away from the Gaza news, a comment on the wasting of lives, by the means of what Israel is doing in Gaza and by other means. My blogger friend Elizabeth posted this comment of the movie 'The Reader' on her blog. It is an admirable and concise comment.
Thoughts on "The Reader"
Today I saw "The Reader," a film which was much better that I thought it would be. It was very different from most Hollywood films, in that it was filled with ambiguities. The audience is left to ponder the numerous possible motivations for several characters' actions. It was a refreshing change from the black-and-white, good guy v. bad guy tales we usually see.
*SPOILER ALERT*
I am pretty sure that most critics and probably the majority of people who've seen this film have misunderstood aspects of it. My guess is most people saw the character of Hannah Schmitz as an evil woman who had a crisis of conscience at the end of her life. To me this would be a simplistic explanation. First of all, Hannah Schmitz, if a real person, would have had an IQ somewhere between 65 and 75, along with a characterological disorder causing difficulties with empathy. The two in combination explain all of her actions, and lead to the conclusion that she cannot be held to the same standards as a more normal person. I make the assessment of her intelligence based on her illiteracy, her concrete, simplistic thinking, her obedience to authority, and her shame. All of these characteristics are common in people with borderline IQs. The characterological disorder explains her embarrassment at not being able to read despite her seeming lack of guilt over her particular actions. Probably, the character disorder would be a mixed personality disorder, with some sociopathic traits, some narcissistic traits and some schizoid traits. The schizoid traits are manifested in her isolated lifestyle, her lack of friends, and her often emotionless interactions. Her narcissism is manifested in her shame and at the end of the movie, her expressed pride in having learned how to read, totally missing the point of her old friend's question.
So, why did Hannah kill herself and leave money to one of her victims? She may have killed herself as much out of fear of the outside world as out of guilt. As for her last act of repentance, I find this very interesting. One could hypothesize that the trial and long years in prison made her realize at the very least that society found her actions very wrong, and this would have led to embarrassment and shame if not guilt. She may have wanted to be remembered as a better person. But another explanation could be that the continuing gifts of Michael Berg led to a slow character change. Someone she had hurt had to some degree forgiven her, enough to take pity on her and send her meaningful gifts that took a great deal of time to create. This type of action could spur character change. Perhaps it is the only way to create character change in such an individual.
But perhaps the most interesting aspect of the film was the response of the victim. She of course does not want to accept the money. Yet she keeps the tin box, remarking how much it reminds her of a childhood keepsake she once had. Does this indicate she saw a similarity between herself and her persecutor, and if so, was this an intended message of the film? Or could it simply be that the victim wanted to somehow acknowledge the gesture of atonement? Perhaps she was affected by the actions of Michael Berg, and his ability to at least partially forgive the woman who damaged his childhood. Perhaps the film is about a universal desire to try to be a better person, despite the enormity of crimes either perpetrated or suffered by oneself.

Evidence Of War Crimes In Gaza: The Forest And The Trees
An excellent documentary from Channel Four, UK.
It is time someone tells Israel to stop, the international community doesn't seem to be ready to do it, out of guilt for WWII holocaust, among other things. A labor Jew MP whose parents died in the holocaust is telling Israel to stop. The holocaust industry still lives on. For how long ? Until the last Palestinian ? (Thanks Richard)
Israel used white phosphorus in Gaza.
According to the US military, this isn't a problem.
According to Amnesty International, the use of White Phosphorus in civilian areas is a war crime:
Israel says it is going to investigate the use of white phosphorus in Gaza. Thanks but no thanks, as we already know the answer to this investigation.
In my opinion, this story of the use of white phosphorus in civilian areas, although highly disturbing, is a zionist distraction. Because the use of white phosphorus is permitted in certain conditions, the answer to this war crime will never be clear. Israel shelled civilian areas heavily and intentionally as in the case of the UN school, and white phosphorus or not, the whole Israeli offensive on Gaza and the previous blockade is a war crime. Lets not drown into the details provided to us as a smokescreen by Israel. You know what this reminds me of ? It reminds me of the people who negate the Nazi gaz chambers. They often resort to details in order to refute the extermination of Jews. The irony here is that it is the Jewish state who is using the Nazi tactic. And it is not the first time. War crimes have the same pattern, easy to identify, but we prefer to be distracted by details, the reality of this situation and of the whole conflict is so horrible for Palestinians, but we prefer to turn our eyes and let ourselves be distracted by the details...

UN chief demands investigation into Israeli attack on Gaza headquarters
A visibly furious Ban Ki-moon condemned as "outrageous, shocking and alarming" the destruction he had seen while touring Gaza...
Furious ? This was supposed to be the YES man for Israel and the US in the UN. To have made Ban Ki Moon furious is quite an achievement. But this does not surprise me coming from Israel. Israel is brute force, disregard for the weak, and the UN is weak. Combine brute force with disregard for the weak and you may get a feeling of what Palestinians are going through every day. The arrogance of this state has gone as far as accusing the Palestinians of their own misery in Gaza. ''You elected the wrong government, it is your fault'' says the official hasbara. And the official hasbara doesn't stop here. Palestinian children are starving in Gaza ? ''It is Hamas's fault, these people don't care about their children, they should give them food instead of sending rockets on Israel''. This line was heard yesterday on the BBC (homerun) by a certain Sara Saber-Freedman, from the Canada Israel committee. How can you answer such perverse accusations, denial of reality, lack of empathy, and outright lies ? You don't. You just switch off the radio...

The Goal Of The War On Gaza: More Palestinian Refugees Outside Israel And More Wars
I read this information at the Angry Arab site: More than 200 tents are being set in the Egyptian town of Rafah. One possibility is that the war on Gaza is meant to push Gazans out. A symptom of this possibility is Tzipi Livini's recent visit to the US where she signed an anti-smuggling Gaza deal with the US. According to the terms of the deal, Israel would stop its offensive at the condition that Israeli troops would remain for an indefinite period of time in Gaza and that Israel would regain control of the Rafah crossing border. This agreement which is unhospitable to many Palestinians living in Gaza would make them leave the territory. In the coming weeks, months, and long after the official end of the Israeli offensive, a silent war will take place in Gaza in which the IOF* will make everything possible to push Palestinians out of their territory. There will be a new generation of Palestinian refugees. Palestinians have been living in refugee camps since 1948 without a state and without rights. Israel refuses that Palestinian refugees return to their homes and land.
If this is the goal of the war on Gaza, it is worrying. More than suffering, deprivation, and killings, creating a new generation of Palestinian refugees outside Israel is going to fuel anger in the Arab world giving us a new generation of young people willing to conduct suicide missions against Israel and its accomplices in the West. Gaza is becoming a laboratory for zionists where they experiment all forms of terror, including more elaborate ethnic cleanesing under the amicable watch of the international community, and the manufacturing of terrorists.
This is a very convenient situation for Israel that would permit the state of Israel to justify bombings and incursions in refugee camps outside Israel and at its 'frontiers', give excuses for more wars - as it did with Lebanon - indefinitely repel the chances for peace for which Israel must compromise and give back some land, and even gain some more land, feeding the territorial addiction of the zionist state and keeping its frontiers elastic and loose. Because, after all, if Israel is not able to achieve peace despite the divisions of Arab countries and the chronic weakness of Palestinian resistance movements, this is because Israel, a very young nation, is still unsure about its territory, and does not want peace, since peace means a fixed and internationally recognised frontier.
From the archives: From the moment it withdrew from Gaza in 2005 Israel wanted war.

He is disturbed that most of the Israeli public and much of the media is blind to the fact that hundreds of Palestinians have been cut to pieces by Israeli fire power. "In the long run, it's not a war of defence. We are creating a thousand suicide bombers for the future from the brothers of the dead, the sons of the dead ... in the long term, we are creating more terror. You can't separate the war in Gaza from the fact that the Palestinian nation is under occupation for more than 40 years. Bolivia severes diplomatic ties with Israel, the rest of the world should follow
To protest Israel's war crimes In Gaza, Bolivia today announced that it is severing diplomatic ties with Israel. Evo Morales leads and other countries should follow. An action like this one is urgently required.
More on this from Jews Sans Frontières.
UPDATE: European plans to turn Israel into a "privileged" partner enjoying special political, diplomatic and trade links were frozen by Brussels today in protest at the Israeli onslaught in Gaza. OK, this doesn't match Bolivia's action but the EU has become a staunch supporter of Israel lately, following Israel's and the US mistreatment of Gaza and its population by blocking life sustaining aid. But this move by the EU is important, it makes clear that what Israel is doing in Gaza is unacceptable. There is another fact misrepresented in the western press and By Israel, It is Israel who broke the truce, and it did it right after signing it with Hamas. Israel strives for war. Watch the video and read the links below.
Talking about Israel's actions in Gaza, the mainstream press is presenting the war as Hamas's fault. But it is time for some cold statistics. We see what we want to see: Gaza is the unseen Guantanamo.
The fact that Obama wants to close Guantanamo in his first week in office is ironic. Because Gaza is Guantanamo multiplied by 2000, with a revolt, minus the food, the electricity. But sharing the same undignified existence under the law of the occupier-prison guard, in a prison forgotten by Humanity where only violence, coercion, and the absence of international law, reign. Why being ashamed by Guantanamo and not by Gaza ? This is western liberal hypocrisy...

On Israel, racism, and when to consider armed resistance acceptable
Peter Beaumont, The Guardian
I think resistance to opression and occupation by a powerful state should be rethinked and redefined in the era of state monopoly of violence. I would make a difference between Hezbollah and Hamas. I think Hezbollah's armed resistance has worked against Israel. Hamas's technique is not working. They are occupied and their society is exhausted. They should first rebuild the social fabric of Gaza and Palestinians in general before taking up armed resistance again. They have done it in the past and Israel, the US, and the international community, have worked hard to destroy the Palestinian society in the name of the fight against terrorism.
Now it is time to rebuild Palestinian society from the inside, even if it means renouncing armed resistance for a while. I have a suggestion, Israel should be attacked at its weakest point, the definition of Israeli society and democracy. As the two state solution has faded to a point of no return, the only way and option left for Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank to gain the same civil rights as Jews is to convert to Judaism, all of them. The racist rabbis will go nut and Israel will have to refuse them this right. And so Israel will appear to the world as it is, a racist state based on race and not religion. There are of course purely Muslim states in the ME as we are always reminded by zionists who refuse the fact that a state based on religion is not a democratic state. But anybody can convert to Islam. Can anybody convert to Judaism ? If I was to take the road of pacifist resistance to the state of Israel in order to rebuild Palestinian society, I would do it by confronting the central racist tenants of the zionist entity, the state of Israel.
What has made the issue even more murky - as Conor Gearty, professor of human rights law at the LSE has noted - is the way in which terrorism is less and less regarded as a "technique", albeit a horrible one, in pursuit of a political agenda. Instead, it has been deliberately redefined, largely by states, to mean a "category of person" - making it easy to ignore the underlying causes while concentrating on the acts.
None of the above should be read as a defence of terror, or even as an argument for armed resistance. The tragedy of Gaza is the acceptance on both sides that killing and oppression have more value than negotiation. And while many in the international community - and in Israel - remain stuck on the idea that the Jewish state has a monopoly on the deployment of the language of "supreme emergency", more violence is inevitable.

A Song For Gaza
I found the link to the Youtube song in my mailbox, sent by Rime Allaf who has a transcript of the song on her blog.
'We will not go down in the night without a fight'
The song is by the Los Angeles based singer songwriter Michael Heart.
And you know things are going wrong for Israel when there are songs for Gaza in English at Youtube. The problem for Israel right now is that, even though their propaganda against those terrorists - who launch artisanal rockets on illegal settlers to protest occupation, humiliation and deprivation - was already in full action before the attack against Gaza, it is still ineffective. People worldwide recognise what is being done by the state of Israel against civilian populations in Gaza as it is, a crime against humanity, a war crime, and an ugly occupation.

Hamas Or No Hamas: From The Moment It Withdrew From Gaza Israel Wanted War
By Chris McGreal, The Guardian
On This Blog: Israel disdained the latest truce offered by Hamas
Buttu says that from the day the Israelis withdrew from Gaza, they set about ensuring that it would fail economically. "When the Israelis pulled out, we expected that the Palestinians in Gaza would at least be able to lead some sort of free life. We expected that the crossing points would be open. We didn't expect that we would have to beg to allow food in," she said.
Buttu notes that even before Hamas was elected three years ago, the Israelis were already blockading Gaza. The Palestinians had to appeal to US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and James Wolfensohn, the president of the World Bank, to pressure Israel to allow even a few score of trucks into Gaza each day. Israel agreed, then reneged. "This was before Hamas won the election. The whole Israeli claim is one big myth. If there wasn't already a closure policy, why did we need Rice and Wolfensohn to try to broker an agreement?" asked Buttu.
Yossi Alpher, a former official in the Mossad intelligence service and an ex-adviser on peace negotiations to the then prime minister, Ehud Barak, said the blockade of Gaza is a failed strategy that might have strengthened Hamas. "I don't think anyone can produce clear evidence that the blockade has been counterproductive, but it certainly hasn't been productive. It's very possible it's been counterproductive. It's collective punishment, humanitarian suffering. It has not caused Palestinians in Gaza to behave the way we want them to, so why do it?" he said. "I think people really believed that, if you starved Gazans, they will get Hamas to stop the attacks. It's repeating a failed policy, mindlessly."
On This Blog: Israel disdained the latest truce offered by Hamas
Treating Palestinians and Arabs in contempt and dealing only with those among them who are submissive, extracting from them humiliating concessions while continuing to expand illegal settlements, taking more land, more from Jerusalem, more from this, and more from that, one may wonder what are Israel and the US, the mightier, gaining with this strategy ? The rage of those who are weaker ? Their defeat ? No, not only this. What we are witnessing with this strategyis the progressive transformation, with frightening meticulousness, of a situation that could be potentially negociated into an explosive, unmanageable one.The intentional derailing of peace in the ME.

Israel disdained the latest truce offered by Hamas
From Alain Gresh's blog.
« Our position vis-à-vis the recognition of Israel is one of reserve. However, despite this, we said that we will not be an obstacle to the different Arab actions meant to implement their 2002* peace initiative. Arabs have multiplied peace initiatives, the latest was in 2007. But the Israeli government has refused the Arab peace initiative by playing with words, multiplying manoeuvers, and breaking the initiative into small pieces and problems, not considering it as a whole. »
« The truce did not end by a decision. It was meant to last six months, and that's what's happening. There is no need for somebody to announce the end of the truce. The agreement for the truce rested on three points: a military truce; its extension, after few months, to the West Bank; the end of the Gaza blockade. Moreover, Egypt, who brokered the truce, committed to reopen its Rafah border as part of the agreement. »
« The different aspects of the agreement were respected, only marginally, by Israel. Violence decreased as agressions against Gaza became few but did not stop (twenty-five Palestiniens died since the agreement was signed). As for the rest, nothing was accomplished. The crossing points which were due to reopen within ten days of the signing of the agreement on June 19 2008 were only partially reopened. And, during the last period, the situation in Gaza became worse than before the agreement. Earlier during the truce, we realised that the agreement wasn't going to achieve anything, but we were committed to respect it as it is out of gratitude to Egypt who worked hard to negociate the agreement. »
« In June, when the agreement was signed, 94 % of the Gaza population was for the agreement. Today, the people of Gaza are against because it did not achieve what was the most important thing for them: the end of the blockade. The non renewal of the agreement was therefore natural expressing the state of mind of the population of Gaza.»
The truce signed in June 2008 could not have been anything else than a temporary truce meant to achieve precise goals. Since these goals were not achieved and « since what is at the origin of the present situation, the occupation, results in resistance», the truce was going to end by war. « We are conducting a defensive war, not a war of agression. »
Khaled Mechaal, Hamas political leader in exile, to Alain Gresh on December 19th, 2008.
*The Arab 2002 initiative recognises Israel as before the 1967 war borders, Jerusalem as capital of a Palestinian state and leaves open the question of the right of return of palestinian refugees. Hamas, as well as all Palestinian organisations, except Islamic Jihad, signed an internal agreement whcih meets these points.
