Islamophobia: Verbatim

Preamble: A commentator on this post asked me if I was able to produce the sources for the quotes below. I had no reason myself to doubt what is on Counterpunch's website, I have been reading them regularly over the last two years and know very well the quality of their journalism. But then to a reader I don't know very well this could have appeared as a dismissive argument.

I wrote immediately to Counterpunch and received, within 3 hours, an answer from Alexander Cockburn and from the author of the article who produced the quotes, Trish Schuh. Meanwhile I was able to retrieve myself the original sources for all the quotes on the web by a simple google search.

I want to thank Counterpunch, specially Alexander Cockburn and Trish Schuh for their immediate reactions to my request. This is serious and respectful journalism !

Daniel Pipes on Muslims and Arabs:
"brown-skinned peoples cooking strange foods and not exactly maintaining Germanic standards of hygiene."

Daniel Pipes again on Muslims:
"Individuals may appear law-abiding and reasonable, but they are part of a totalitarian movement, and as such, all must be considered potential killers... This is what I have dubbed the Sudden Jihad Syndrome, whereby normal-appearing Muslims abruptly become violent. It has the awful but legitimate consequence of casting suspicion on all Muslims.
Who knows whence the next jihadi? How can one be confident a law-abiding Muslim will not suddenly erupt in a homocidal rage?"

For instance Daniel Pipes institute seeks: "the delegitimation of the Islamists. We seek to have them shunned by the government, the media, the churches, the academy and the corporate world.''

U.S General William Boykin on Allah (God for Muslims), a quote that US secretary of defense R. Rumsfeld declined to criticise:

"Well, you know what I knew, that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God, and his was an idol."

Marine Corp Lt. Gen. James Mattis's on Muslims:
"You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of alot of fun to shoot them."

Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Daniel Gillerman on Muslims: "While it may be true- and probably is- that not all Muslims are terrorists, it also happens to be true that nearly all terrorists are Muslim."

A Danish MP labeled Muslims "a cancerous growth."

In 2005, for the first time since the atomic devastation of Japan, an Associated Press poll found that half of all Americans would approve the use of atomic bombs, especially against terrorist targets.

And we are not talkimg here about what has been achieved on the 'Battlefield of the 'war on terror' by the Bush administration against muslims in Afghanistan, Irak, Guantanamo and Palestine.

Thanks Issam for the link to Schuh's article.

UPDATE: read here some Danish 'gems' taken from Cosmic's today post.

I'm going to link to the Cosmic Duck post which is excellent.

As regards the Counterpunch article, it contains no references or links to the alleged statements and that's a serious shortcoming because the quotes are unverifiable. Shame, I would have liked to present it too but not in this form.

Gert,

I wrote to counterpunch asking them to link me to Schuh to settle this matter. I don't know Schuh very well but Counterpunch is a serious publication. Get back to you on this whenever I have an answer from them.

Gert, Just to answer your skepticism. I wouldn't doubt that such words could emanate from Pipes for example. His articles are so full of hate that I couldn't read them without feeling deeply disturbed.

For the first sentence about 'brown-skinned people' he actually wrote this in 1990.
You van find it at:
http://www.danielpipes.org/article/198

and for his defense he said:
''My goal in this article was to characterize the thinking of Western Europeans, not give my own views. In retrospect, I should either have put the words “brown-skinned peoples” and “strange foods” in quotation marks or made it clearer that I was explaining European attitudes rather than my own.''
Defense at:
http://www.danielpipes.org/cair.php

As for the rest, I really don't have time to dig through and I will be waiting Scuh's or Counterpunch's answer.

Gert, You might be interested also in checking this.

Sophia,

This was not a case of skepticism on my part but we all know that some people will pull quotes out of their hats when needed, without references or validation.

It seems the "drive the Jews into the sea" is also one of them, as you pointed out elsewhere.

I'm merely urging caution.

As regards CP, that was quick!

Thanks for this, appreciated.

And I must admit I didn't realise just how deep (or skin-deep?) Pipes' Islamophobia actually is. Disgusting, this is just plain racism. And these are the "defenders of Zion"?. I wouldn't want someone like that as an ally if my life depended on it!
