The Madrid Conference for the Middle East is Back

The Madrid conference is back, supported this time by private initiatives but with the attendance of many who were in Madrid in 1991; Hanan Ashrawi, Slomo Ben Ami, and the messages of Gorbatchev, James Baker, Bill Clinton, etc...
Read here a first account by Kanishk Tharoor, managing editor of Madrid11/Open Democracy.

There will probably be a convening at Madrid II by the ME Quartet soon.

However, Arab-Israeli peace will not be the goal of the convenors. The real goal will be to forge a cover for an Arab- Israeli alliance to confront Iran.

The dispossession of the palestinians will continue uninteruppted until there is a genuine Israeli peace party.

Issam, I am worried by your prognosis. I hope that the mdrid conference goal is peace and I think that we have to make a difference between the convenors at Madrid and the quartet.
The fact that there were no messaged from Bush father and son to the convenors in Madrid and that the conference got no coverage in the mainstream media tells me that the Madrid conference has nothing to do with the war against Iran.

I rarely disagree with you but here you are mistaken.I just heard a CBC Radio report on Rice trip in Israel. The reprter commented that the Arabs states have told the US that if they want Arab support in Iraq there has to be some movement on the Palestinian question.

The Americans are taking turns in fighting Sunnis and Shites in Iraq. They are now preparing to clobber the Shites and Iran's assets again in Iraq. Madrid is their cover as was Madrid I after the first Gulf War in 1991.
