But why was Israel so interested in a landlocked country in Central Africa? The reason is spelt out by Slater in a later telegram. Israel was backing rebellion in southern Sudan to punish Sudan for supporting the Arab cause in the Six-Day War. "They do not want the rebels to win. They want to keep them fighting."...Amin had his own motive for helping them: many of his own people, the Kakwa, live in southern Sudan. Obote, however, wanted peace in southern Sudan. That worried the Israelis and they were even more worried when, in November 1970 Obote sacked Amin. Their stick for beating Sudan was suddenly taken away.

Israel has been hated by its neighbors since it was created in 1948 with the blessing of the United Nations. As a result Israel did not have much choice among allies.
The real question is why, after Idi Amin lost power, did Saudi Arabia offer a generous haven to this murderous leader.
You will find any reason to pick on poor Israel but you give a free ride to Saudi Arabia, which has enough land mass and oil to solve the entire Palestinian refugee problem all by iteself.
Anon,
I don't have much sympathy for Saudi Arabia, it is a religion based state like Israel. However, SA does not occupy another country while putting nearly its entire population in refugee camps and is not in contravention to international law except for Human Rights violations which by the way are common in Israel.
And may I remind you that it was the Hejazi king Fayçal who gave his blessing to weizman about the Balfour declaration in exchange for kingdoms in the mashriq (Iraq, Jordan) given to him by the British ? Without Fayçal maybe the birth of the state of Israel would have been much arduous...
Israel does not "occupy" any territory. What you call the West Bank was never controlled by the people you call the Palestinians.
Nevertheless Israel has from time to time expressed willingness to withdraw from the West Bank in exchange for a peace deal. Hamas and its Iranian puppet-masters have refused such a deal and instead put suicide bombs on mentally slow teens.
