Why I will not vote for Ignatieff

This week end, the liberal party is voting to select the delegates who will choose its new leader. Here is my argument on why Ignatieff should not lead the Liberal party and Canada.

(Thanks L.M. for pointing an error about the voting process for the Liberal party leadership which appeared in a previous version of this post)

This weekend the liberals are just selecting delegates to vote in the leadership convention. The actual convention doesn't take place until December.

Thanks L.M. I wrote the post very quickly and will correct it right now.

Great post.

The problem with Michael Ignatieff is that he’s an expert in 19th century cum Cold War-era political philosophy- just like Pope Benedict and Secretary Rice…

And he’s using his obsoletely statist Soviet-era critique of totalitarianism to analyze the dangers of ethnic and religious bigotry in the Post-Cold War, an era characterized by the massive rise of non-governmental, amorphous forms of low-intensity guerrilla insurgencies.

Ignatieff’s narrow-minded use of preconceived political categories flows from the same flawed “logic” as the Neocons’ “Churchillian” speeches comparing Saddam to Stalin or Hitler and Chirac or Putin to Daladier and Chamberlin…

As Aristotle once said that’s simply an error in “faulty parallelism”, the classical mistake of feeble minds who like to find comfort in existing ideas, instead of using rational thinking to better understand existing facts

Victor,

You know how to put great ideas in few simple words.

I agree with your comment but specially on the following:

''Ignatieff’s narrow-minded use of preconceived political categories flows from the same flawed “logic” as the Neocons’ “Churchillian” speeches comparing Saddam to Stalin or Hitler and Chirac or Putin to Daladier and Chamberlin…''

Lets just hope Ignatieff will not succeed.

He just might succeed. After Martin's resignation, the joke among political observers was that no one wanted the leadership. The more qualified experienced Liberal politicians didn't want to risk their future leadership opportunities by running at the wrong time. That's why they threw in a few well known, but ultimately wild-cards like Ignatieff and Rae.

I just talked to friend last night who told me that he was called by a former Liberal cabinet minister and current MP to support Ignattieff delegates in todays delegate selection. He told him that as a Palestinian he could not support Ignatieff because of his remarks about "not losing any sleep" over the massacre in Qana. He remark was met with silence and then a thank you, good bye.

If you want to find out more reasons to oppose Iggy see http://www.stopiggy.com/

I don't mind if Ignatieff wins the Liberal leadership and lose the elections and I think this is the most possible scenario for Canada. Ignatieff cannot win against Harper. However where I find myself concerned is that centrists in Canada will lose in this scenario. if this scenario will be confirmed I think the NDP will be the party where I would go and the NDP leader must be aware of that. He must start to work toward this objectif. Even though I like him very much, I am afraid Layton does not have the substance for such a task.

Issam,
For Ignatieff's remark I knew about it only lately.
What disturbs me in this remark is that not only it shows that Ignatieff did not have any sensibility to the suffering of the Lebanese but he might as well wanted to show willingly this lack of sensibility as he did in the interview with the journalist who asked him about the people who resented him because he did wrong to them; he looked into his eyes and confirmed that he did wrong but that he will not apologize for what he did...

Hi there,

Check out this article: it looks like our favorite Neocon-buster is set to win the fateful Virginia senate race…

I’m starting to like Dixie-style settling of accounts!

:)

Let’s hope the ignominious Ignatieffarisee will soon join George Allen in the dustbins of Neocon history!

Hi Victor,
I am happy that your candidate has more than a substantial chance of winning this race, happy to know that your enthusiasm will probably be rewarded.
