Jean Bricmont on Why Bush Can Get Away With Attacking Iran

That's the Guy. I love everything he writes. One of the last few remaining true rational academics and a committed public intellectual.

"All the ideological signposts for attacking Iran are in place. The country has been thoroughly demonized because it is not nice to women, to gays, or to Jews. That in itself is enough to neutralize a large part of the American "left". The issue of course is not whether Iran is nice or not according to our views -- but whether there is any legal reason to attack it, and there is none; but the dominant ideology of human rights has legitimized, specially in the left, the right of intervention on humanitarian grounds anywhere, at any time, and that ideology has succeeded in totally sidetracking the minor issue of international law.

Israel and its fanatical American supporters want Iran attacked for its political crimes--supporting the rights of the Palestinians, or questioning the Holocaust. Both U.S. political parties are equally under the control of the Israel lobby, and so are the media. The antiwar movement is far too preoccupied with the security of Israel to seriously defend Iran and it won't attack the real architects of this coming war--the Zionists-- for fear of "provoking antisemitism". Blaming Big Oil for the Iraq war was quite debatable, but, in the case of Iran, since the country is about to be bombed but not invaded, there is no reason whatsoever to think that Big Oil wants the war, as opposed to the Zionists. In fact, Big Oil is probably very much opposed to the war, but it is as unable to stop it as the rest of us."

A recent decision by German officials to withhold support for any new sanctions against Iran has pushed a broad spectrum of officials in Washington to develop potential scenarios for a military attack on the Islamic regime, FOX News confirmed Tuesday.

Hi Sophia, had seen this before. Same old same old. I am rather tired of this "bush will attack" blahblah!

It makes the rest of humanity seem like mashed potatoes. Who said we are powerless against the "corporate" (masquerading as Zionism) plots?

Sometimes, it feels like the "war predictors" will be almost disappointed if USrael actually won't attack Iran! :)

Naj,
I understand the tiredness but it wasn't for the news that I pointed out the article, it was for the critique of the consensus on war that exist in western society when it comes to attacking a 'different' country and how hostilities are literally constructed on the basis of 'differences' with the country to be attacked, differences based on assumed western moral superiority...

Naj,

Sorry that you missed my point but in the future I am not pointing out any other article on Iran. I unserstand the nervousness. You have family there...

Crooks and Liars:

Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-225-3121. We need to let our representatives know that Bush cannot attack Iran. GW will not go away quietly as his disastrous term comes to an end. I think most of us believe Iran is the next target on Bush and Cheney’s to-do list. Kristol, the equally insane Ledeen (read this madness) and all his Neocon, warmongering pals are pushing the White House at every moment to make the attack happen.

Flood the Switchboards Before It's Too Late.

Got this from John Amato at Crooks and Liars who has credible info that an attack will come soon, so they are asking us to bombard their switchboards.

Larry,

I wish I can call the WH but I am not a US citizen. However, I can call Sarkozy and Harper because I am a binational, French and Canadian, and also Lebanese but, thanks to Bush and USrael, I don't know what being Lebanese means anymore...

Sarkozy and Stephen Harper will be pretty much in this war. Sarkozy was warmongering at the end of August when he delivered his first foreign policy speech as a president and many found his threats against Iran too much to fit in a first foreign policy discourse for a first time president...

Sophia,

I don't think I missed your point.

I expressed my own opinion with regards to the article.

Sophia,

We all know what the war on Iran is about, and we also know all the tools and devices being used in such vice. But I still think that all of this is a part of the "cold war" strategy. Both Iranian and the American and the rest of the neoconservatives of the world BENEFIT from a sizeable figure of a demon to draw funds and benefits from.

I also don't think that the "left" is that naive to want to wage a bloody war based on human rights and etc. Iran has also been very proactive. So, I disagree with the article, I think it is just too pessimistic!

Naj,

I still think you missed the point of the article and that you did not actually read it carefully. But you don't have to.
I can't read evrything that is there on the web and neither can you.
I just left a comment on your post on Iran's prisons pointing to this article, and it seemed to me that both articles dealt with the false perception that is being constructed in the west for building the case against Iran.

Yes and as I said, I did pick on that point. However, I still disagree about the strength of the "human rights violation" case against Iran. In other words, I don't think the "real" left buys it!

I had read this article somewhere else, Sophia!
